Im struggling to understand the design of these powered monitors, with power switchs and volume controlls on the front. I cant think of a reason they'd be any use to anyone there...

As far as the power switches, I think that's just the convenience factor. Volume controls on the front sounds like low cost prosumer monitors made for home studios. It's also a convenience factor in that regard as well. But many studios that are outfitted more professionally will have monitor switchers with volume controls on them or mixers with dedicated level controls for the monitors.

Most likely, there's a marketing factor like Sonic said. What will the people buy? kind of thing. What makes this brand stand out from other brands...

actually I prefer a volume knob over the software fader, its faster and probably an old habit of the analog days. I don't have the knobs on my front, and am required to used the mute on the software... but it would be nice at times to just turn a volume knob instead of pulling up the screens. (damn that sounds lazy? :p )

My speakers have a standby switch on the front. It's convenient for times when you're powering up/down gear or swapping out cables and such and you want to avoid transient spikes going into the speakers. I used to think it was just vintage gear that sometime gave spikes. But I bought a Mackie Onyx 400F as a less expensive secondary ADC/DAC and that thing makes one hell of a boom when it’s powering up and down.

As for the level and "tone" controls you see sometimes even on very expensive monitors, I think those are lame. But that's just my personal, totally unbiased opinion. ;)
