Hello all!! I am in need of a some monitor help. I would like to purchase some new monitors and I am not sure if I should go with active or passive. I have a Carver 900 reciever, which is about 90W per channel. I enjoy the sound of it, but I also wouldn't mind ugrading as well.
Models that I am looking at

Alesis Prolinear 720 and 820
KRK V6
Fostex PM0.5 or PM2

I keep hearing good stuff about Wharedale on here, but never had a chance to hear them anywhere. I would like something clean with a good bass response.

Any suggestions??

Oh- The main style of music is Techno (progressive house and jungle)

Thanks

I do lots of techno, folk, and voice-over... Currently I'm using the Fostex PM0.5's. Let's just say after mixing on these I'm always right in the ballpark on every other system I try out a given mix. These are powered, and they put out more low end than you'd think they ever could -- but for really deep bass I use headphones, plus a sub on another system (though I rarely have to make big adjustments). Using other speakers prior to the Fostex's I was running all over the house on different systems to get a good mix. Now I could mix just on the Fostex's if I wanted to...

The PM2's are much bigger than the PM0.5's (there are also PM1.0's) and will put out a lot more bass. They are also powered, so your Carver doesn't come into play.

Fostex has been making high-end speaker drivers for decades, so they have some idea of what they're doing.

I'd get powered monitors because then you know the amp/speaker combination is ideal (or should be!).

One thing to do is take a CD you know very well and play it through various monitors at your local pro-audio outlet. That's what I did. Buying without hearing/comparing means you're totally relying on opinions.

The Wharfedales do indeed get rave reviews around here. There's probably something to that...

I got a pair of Event PS6s off ebay for about $225, and so far I like them.
