Can someone tell me what is a better connection as far as connecting monitors to a mixing board?
Mixer->Monitor
1/4" -> 1/4"
or
1/4" -> XLR
Mixer->Monitor
1/4" -> 1/4"
or
1/4" -> XLR

IMHO I dont think it really matters if its 1\4>1\4 or 1\4>xlr, Ive done both and it sounded the same to me.

If your gear has balanced connections, you will most likely want to use balanced cables, especially if you've got a long run.... but 1/4 vs XLR won't make a difference in sound.

if as he said your connections are balanced, just make sure you are using a 1/4" TRS, and not a 1/4" TS
