Hello everyone I am am new to this Site .

I am just about to purchase some Monitors for recording ( Used or New )

I have my sights on these

Alesis Mk11 Powered/Unpowered

Behringer B103a Powered

Yamaha Ns 10 ?? Used

Anyways I have an Amp by Crest Audio it is a V 650 A/B Class and was wondering if I purchased passive monitors whether this amp would be ok ? I realize this amp is quite powerful but could It be used it at a lower volume/setting to power the passives or am I risking blowing the speakers up on impact ????

Many thanks in advance regards Marty

With the Yammy NS10's , I think they are out of my price range ATM , just dreaming !

I've used the MK11 Alesis actives and found them pretty good once the attenuation switches are set up for the room acoustics. You shouldn't be able to wreck speakers with a big amp unless doing something daft like having the amp cranked up when an unexpected peaky signal is generated. That's pretty much where your biggest danger lies when using an amp with an output which can exceed the rating of the speaker, it's the signals which you are not expecting, and as the amp has the capability to deliver it, the speaker drivers can be compromised. The kind of thing like unexpected feedback or heavy contact with a mic, or a big fat bass line which doesn't seem that loud but has the woofers hanging on to their surrounds for dear life. The actives mostly have limiters, but sometimes a transient peak can slip by and do some damage. If in doubt always start with everything set to minimum and gently increase the volume.

as phrasemaker says, you can use that amp as long as you use some sense and don't crank the speakers louder than it seems like they should go. That amp is only putting out 200 watts perchannel into 8 ohms so it's not like you're using a kilowatt amp into the monitors.

Don't get the NS10s ..... they're mostly for checking to see what your mixes sound like on crappy sounding consumer speakers.
The others you mentioned are gonna be a bit more accurate.

Give up on the NS-10's. They were never meant to be the only monitors you had. They sound like crap and will give you a headache.

Any of the other ones you've mentioned will be a better choice.
