Stand Up Comity
My desktop PC is a 750MHz Duron, and it's getting a bit long in the tooth.

Would the easiest upgrade be to put a new mobo with CPU and RAM in the case and plug in my current drives?

IF the new motherboard is compatible with the power supply, case, and peripherals, yeah, that would be the cheapest way to go.

You will almost certainly have to reinstall the operating system.

It's XP Pro, and I don't want to go through the security and update hassles.

You may be able to get by without reinstalling but you may have to re-activate Windows due to the hardware change.

My HDDs are EIDE. I don't see EIDE on a lot of MoBo specs. Are they obsolete?

EIDE is also sometimes just referred to as IDE, or PATA, or ATA-100, or ATA-133. Any of those types of slots should be fine, just not SATA or SCSI. Those are newer types of interfaces. Lots of motherboards now have both Standard IDE and Serial ATA (SATA) on them, so you can upgrade to faster drives later.

what kind of PC do you have? Sometimes you may have to get out the Dremel to make the mobo fit if its a dell, hp, compaq, gateway. If you built it then the board should fit. you most likly will have to buy another power supply. but it depends on what processor you get.

It's one I put together four or five years ago or so, and I think the little ATX form factor should work.

I am positive (i may be wrong, but i am positive)....

that you will have to reinstall the os because of the different glue chipset on the motherboard. xp pro won't make a difference.
