Can anyone recommend some specific combos of the above?$300 or less.I may have the opportunity to replace my dinosaur 1gig Duron,512mb 2100DDR piece of shit in the near future, but I'll only get one shot in the next 4 or 5 years to do this, so I'd like to be as current as I can afford.

Depending on how soon you're looking to move, I'll be selling my Pentium 4 3.0 with 1 gig of dual channel DDR 3200 (Corsair CL2) and Intel 865 board. It'd probably be $200 plus shipping for the whole deal.

Anyways, new, I'd probably go Athlon 64 3800+ AM2 ($115), an ASUS AM2 board ($75), and a gig of memory ($100). Can't really go dual core on that budget without skimping too much.

Keep a close eye on Ebay for used systems. Ought to be able to get a Pentium4 somethingorother around that price.

At least you would have PCIe, although you may need to get a graphics card at some point...
Don't know about any dual-core system for that price.

If you want something to last you 4 or 5 years, get one of the Asus P5B boards. They start at $125. An E6300 Core Duo will set you back around $180, then save up for some ram
