Wasn't sure were to post this one. thought I'd try here.

This thing says it's got a max spl of 130. do you think it will handle being about 8 inches from the hammer on a kick drum? It's not like I'd cry if it killed the thing, but perhaps I would be better with a 57 or ?????

Thanks

Put a pop screen in front of it and give it a shot.

But, you should be able to get a good used kick drum type mic (like an ATM25) pretty cheap... and it would be way better. :)

Thanks DJL.

I've got a beta 52 in front of the drum just barely poking in the hole on the front of the head. I'm getting a nice Boom with it. So I'm looking for a good click from the hammer to blend with the boom. I will give the 990 a shot and let you know. I also have a real cheap AKG kick mic (D 550) I might try.

Well for anyone who is wondering. The 990 did get a great click of the hammer at about 6 inches away with no sign of distortion. The only problem is it picks up everything else too. I thought about gating it but both of my gates are taken up on the drums already. Not using them to gate but using the compression in the channels. I might mess with it some more later.

my favorite trick is to take an elctronic kit trigger and stick it on the batterside, then run it through a preamp with alot of gain, and then run it through a graphic eq, then into the board. gives a nice punch with out being to "clicky". ive been thinking of trying this with snare too and just eq'ing it a little diffrent. plus as a gain you have no bleed through on the trigger at all, so you can even use it as a source to gate to.

Just a trigger? no tone module? Interesting.. I've thought about triggering and getting a tone module but the good modules seem to cost a few bucks. Would love to mess with blending the mic's with the samples though.

you can always run it through a tone module if you like, but i never do. the signal from the trigger is just a sudden pop. thats it, but when you blend it with your normal kick sound, it adds a bit of depth to it. the only thing is, is that you gotta pump it way up with gain, i actually prefer using my roctron gainiac on the distortion channel. I usually try to let my E602 carry the super low thud of the kick and let the trigger add some sizzle to it. the greatest part is, is that you can use super cheap triggers, since your not controling a module with it all you need is just the initial pop. the majority of mine are all MF house brand pulse.

Hmm, interesting... I'm going to have to try that too. Thanks for the trigger to preamp tip.

Ya very interesting. Might have to grab me a trigger and see how it does.

Definitely. As I understand it it's just a piece of piezoelectric stuff, right? Or is that actually way off...

im pretty sure they are piezo's, not really all that sure. but they gotta be as they get the sound due to physical pressure.
if anybody tries one on a snare let me know how it works out, all of my equipment is at a freinds house and i rarely have time to mess with it and try new stuff.

Makes as much sense as anything. I'm going to have to pick one up and check it out.
