hey guys, im pretty new to recording me and a buddy are going half with equipment and we plan on doing some pretty good recordings, we plan on using cubase, since my friend already knows it.

we are kind of confused about what kind of mixer to buy, there is no Mackie board that has 8digital outs (we need these for drums) although theres the onyx board but its $800+firewire card($400)......We are deceiding whether to get a Allen And Heath Mixwizard 16:2 Board...but im not sure how good the preamps are since someone said they werent too good, although its an 800$ board.

otherwise how would one of the Maudio preamps do..like the Octane 8 channels http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/Octane-main.html

Please help Thank you!

it woul;d help knowing what sound card or solution you have now.
if you dont have one i would suggest a pci card non usb solution.
people are reporting too many problems with usb.
if were me and i had the cash i would go with an rme solution with standalone mic pre's feeding the rme. rme products have a solid history.
just one mans opinion.
if you want a very nice easy to use multitrack software try powertracks
demo on the pc at pgmusic.com. 49 bucks now. if you think i'm lying about this software being a steal - talk to other users like ne on the powertracks forum at pg.

Mixers aside, what kind of soundcard will you be using?

You also have the option of using a Firewire interface instead of PCI or USB. Various Firewire configurations seem to be working well for many.

delta are good sound cards imho.
powertracks users report they work well.
you might consider on the mixer side , sort of got me thinking
a yamaha mg mixer plus one nice standalone mic pre for lead instruments and vocals. the mg's are around 120 bucks. maybe an fmraudio mic pre
as well. just an idea.

so do you think a Allen and Heath board the mixwizard has good preamps?

The Mixwizards are said to have the same pre-amps as the GL2200 series. If that is true ( I don't know for sure) than the pre-amps are exactly like the DMP3 in sound. I recorded many sources and songs with both pre-amps and they both sound the same in all aspects. The EQ is also much better than any Mackie. Go with the A@H and don't look back.

thanks haha

yah i pretty much knew that, i was just confused, because to go out and spend 900$ on something with preamps that wont sound nice was kind of nervewrecking
