mixing with one monitor?

Right now my monitoring setup includes a pair of headphones, and this crappy 15 year-old (literally about 15 years old) amp I ripped out of an old pair of very low-quality computer speakers that I wired up to a 1/4" and a 9v battery. Everything sounds like diarrhea through it to say the least, and am ready for a more serious and usable mixing environment. It seems that all the online retailers give you the option of buying one monitor instead of a pair. Is mixing with one monitor a common practice? I would seriously like to consider that because I'm strapped for cash and don't want to waste money on an extra monitor if I can help it. Thanks.

I'm sure they did it all the time before stereo was developed.
I think a lot of people test their mixes in mono even when
it is created in stereo. But unless your only recording and
playing back in mono you'll never know what it really and truly
sounds like in stereo. Your headphones might give you a ball
park ideal?

There nothing wrong with mono mixes look what the Beatles
did with it.
