mixing vocals on an already mastered instrumental

I was wondering some tips on mixing vocals on an already mixed and mastered beat, i try to adjust the levels in the vocal but it just sounds like its sitting on top of the beat and doesent sound as one, and if i try to equalize the vocal and beat after a mixdown its taking away from the original sound of the mastered beat...any tips on getting it to sound as one

It will be difficult to make it sound as a whole if it has been mastered, all frequency ranges must have been balanced by the mixing and mastering engineers (if they did it well), so there will be no space for the voice. The other problem is that it must have been compressed without the voice, so again, it will be very very hard to make it sound as one.

Hard to make it sound original but you might want to try adding eq's to the vocal. Even if the beat hasn't been mastered sometimes in the situations I've been in an artist will get a beat which doesn't "fit" their vocal tone so you have to eq their vocal to "fit in" with the instramental.

Yes I agree with him, what I usually do if they both do not match I EQ the low freq. amd the High Freq. to basicly blend.

EQ and compression and limiting on the vocal, leave the backing track as it is. The vocal will probably need a lot of compression and limiting to get it to sit with the backing track.
