Hi, I have been getting good recordings with the VF08, but my vocals seem to be too much up front, even when I use delay or reverb. If you have had any success with a method that might work for my demos, I would appreciate it. The other thing I have noted is if you pan let's say the drums or the keys too wide on a mixdown that you monitor on a portable boom box or small stereo you lose a bit so you have to bring them in between 9 or 3 o'clock to midnite or noon, think you understand. So, will await any wisdom, doesn't have to be from VF08 owners. TIA, Psongman

vocals

i usually find a notch in the mix for the vocals by using eq....

Hi,, thanks Ohioan Dave, could you expound a bit. Do you mean take the vocal channels, let's say 5 and 6 and use the EQ'ing provided by Fostex...apply eq there, or on the final or near final mixdown? Grateful for your direction, Psongman

What kind of mic are you using? It's probably more about the placement and technique you are using.

I know EQ is important, but I think the source of the sound and mic placement, etc, is MORE important. Take a recording that is done with a good sound source and good technique, and you will not have to EQ it very much. Just my opinion.

vocals

it sounds like you are already getting good recordings, just dont like the vocal placement, ive found if you run the track through a spectrum analyser, or by sweeping the eq, you are able to locate the exact offending frequencies on the track that sound kind of obtrusive or harsh, by eqing these frequencies down it will mellow the track some so it sits furter back in the mix,

or turn down the track.....

here is a great one to read (how to mix a pop song from scratch) good infor about how to place parts where they are needed in the mix

H'lo, thanks for all the good addvice, ha! I read the long article on making a pop demo from scratch and a few others. Also this week I went back and rerecorded some vocals, running the mic directly into the VF08. Now, IMHO< it is better to use the Fostex for all its inputs and outputs. I have tried using my Tascam TMD1000 for vocals etc. but it added too much presence. The unit works fine if you record clean, add appropriate EQ and some effects if needed. From what I can glean from my recordings the past few months, it would be nice if you run tracks through a compressor or parametric EQ, then pan, mix and blend.
You have to find what works for your voice and instrument...for me, doubling the vocals works well, no copying and pasting regardless of EQ...the guitars sound great if you keep the changes neat and simple, adding leads or punchier rhythms in layers or different effects settings. Finally, my mix has to sound good on a decent boom box. I don't use monitors much but found if it listens well on a smaller stereo it should sound sweet on a better one. Long rant over, thanks for the answers. Psongman

P.S. Got to get a CD burner, got to!
