Hey guys i am on a tight budget at the minute ..and i am aware that using anything other than studio monitors during mixing is gonna have a detrimental effect on my mixes...

but anyway ...at the minute i have my PC connected to my hifi stereo system....

my quesion is this ...where should i set the EQ on the HIFI sytem when mixing down to give me the best possible chance of making mixes that will sound good on all other systems (i.e. cd players, cd players in cars, other stereo systems) at the minute i usually set the EQ on the HIFI to Flat - meaning that every thing is set to unity gain ( in other words the bass, mids and highs are neither boosted nor cut) i hope i have explained myself well enough as i am a little bit drunk .

thanks in advance :)

Lurgan, that sounds like a good place to start, but also, don't be afraid to adjust these settings to get a feel for what it might sound like on other systems. Put in one of your favorite cd's, and adjust it to what you would normally listen to, then put in your music. How does that sound in comparison? Does it need a little tweaking, or alot?
That might give you a good reference.

And don't feel as if you *need* "studio monitors" - I'll take a decent room with a pair of solid HiFi speakers any day over most boxes that say "Studio Monitor" on them.

I've been working on my XTC cover song this way and it seems to be working OK so far. A rough mix I burned and took to my studio to listen to sounded pretty good.

I know you do! It's "Towers of London." I've been working on it at my super-small set-up at my apartment and plan to use it as the centerpiece of a thread about just what can be done with a minimal set-up.

And just to make it more difficult for myself, I decided to figure the song out entirely by ear!
