Hi, I am new to the concept of PC recording, but excited about the possibilities. I live in a remote part of the world where music from the West is gaining popularity. We have a five piece band and singers (7)

What I need is information on what is needed to set up a recording studio on my PC. My budget for the PD end of things is $1000. The computer I have is a Compaq PIII 866 Mhz. I have 192 MB Ram and two 20 Gig HD. I will be purchasing a CD-R drive in the next few weeks so it is not part of the buget thing.

What suggestions do you all have for a Good to GREAT setup that will enable us to do our own CDs inhouse?

Thanks! cantanz

You'll need recording software. This link gives the names of popular software, some opinions and a poll of what people here are using:

To up the quality of recordings you'll need a good quality audio soundcard. Using the Search facility on this board searching on "soundcard" should yield useful info. and opinions. Also the question Which soundcard? comes up often in the Computing Recording and Soundcards forum, so you could just look in there.

You'll probably need a mixer with a few mics. to record your vocal ensemble (and your instruments). The mixer will be connected to your soundcard using whatever cable is appropriate.

You'll need: anything else I haven't thought of.

Hope this helps.

If you're hoping to track everything individually (which I'm sure you'd like), you're probably looking at spending most of your budget on a good multi-input sound card. I'd suggest the M-Audio Delta 1010, or a C-Port. Depending on the number of tracks you need to record at once, you may need to buy 2 (which you could probably still do under $1000). If you haven't budgeted for a mixer, don't buy a cheap one. Mackie makes great mixers for recording.

I have a c-port,which is 8X8 full duplex(plus stereo S/PDIF which gives you 10 total channels).Up to 4 units can be daisey-chained for up to 40 tracks simultanious. I paid about $420 US for it.
As far as a mixer,I agree with Sean about the Mackie. The VLZ models have nice, clean pres.Good luck!

you said it. a mackie mixer and a delta1010 or c-port. the cport and the delta both come with logic.. not sure which versions. the c-port will run you $399 and the delta... cheapest price i've seen is about $450 check ebay

Thanks!!

Thanks for the great replies. I'm off to check out the specs now on c-port and the delta 1010. Where might I find a good sourse to look at a MackieVLZ on line.

blessins!
