Mixing to MR8

hey guys, my guitarist has an MR-8. So far its just the 2 of us recording, with me on drums

I have 6 mics with a yamaha MG 12/4 and I use all the imputs and everything.

To get my drums on the 8 track would I run 2 cables, 1 from the stereo left and one from the stereo right?

In addition is there any way I can somehow rig a splitter up to it so The guitar can be directly imputted into it?

Sorry if its a dumb question Im new to recording. In addition at his house he puts bass and some lead guitar over the rhythm guitar and drums.

We do songs where we rely on each other for the que ins and its really just us jamming so we couldnt really get it so He plays and then I listen to it and play along with it becuase we go for different amounts of time on the solo's and everything.

Just plug or mic his guitar into the Yamaha 12/4 and mix it in with your drum sounds and send it to the L/R outputs and into the channels 1 and 2 of the MR8

or.....

in the Yamaha - pan all drums hard left and record on either track 1, 3, 5, or 7 of the mr8 (end up with 1 mono track of all drums - mae sure you get the levels right)

and pan the guitar hard right, or plug into input B of the mr8 and record guitar on track 2, 4, 6, or 8

at least then you would have the guitar on a separate track

how many channels does your mixer have? I would just record the drums in stereo as you described, to track 5/6 Then record the guitar to another track after the drums. If you really want to record the drums and guitar at the same time, you will have to have enough channels on your mixer is all, but you would be better off recording the instruments seperatly
 
Recording the instruments seperately is the way to go. Especially with guitar and drums. Getting to sound right with other overdubs would be difficult. If you need to hear his guitar to do your drum parts then plug his guitar into the mixer but monitor out only the guitar into headphones for you. That way you hear the guitar but it won't be going to the main out into the MR8 with the drums. If the guitar leads the song in before the drums then you may have to use one track as a click track. If you don't have a metronome, record a count by clicking your sticks together either for the whole song or your lead in. It can always be deleted. This way both tracks can be recorded in stereo and you can pan L or R later if you want. Mic your drums into your mixer then record the kit a couple times to hear what they sound like. Make adjustments to what you like. Then go for your good takes. I use a Y cable to take the 2 outs of my mixer to one input in the MR8. Good luck. Pj
