I was just wandering if anyone could help me out. I am a little bit new to this stuff so my question probably sounds dumb. I was wandering if I could hook a mixing table up to speakers or do i have to run it through something else before it gets to the speakers. Please reply!

Unless your mixing board is powered, i.e. has an amp built in you will need to run the outputs from your mixer into some type of amplifier, be it a home stereo amp/receiver or a power amplifier designed specifically for studio application.

The aforementioned mixers are not powered and need amplication. Yamaha and Samson does make powered mixers.Powered mixers are not
"only huge and giant ones" :)

It's also possible to bypass an amplifier when working with "unpowered mixers" (most mixers that we talk about are unpowered). You can simply use "powered monitors" that have amps already built into them.

Some common examples are Mackie HR824, Event Electronics 20/20's, Genelec has a few models, Roland has one, yamaha has one. etc.

i've never seen a powered mixer designed for recording, however i assume there might be some with decent quality. powered mixers often are like a cube (or more rectangular) where a normal mixer is relatively flat in comparison to it's length and width... powered monitors (both for recording and PA) purposes may work for you, or you'd want a power amp and speakers

Thanks for all the input guys its really helped me out.

Right now I am looking at the Mackie CFX 20. I like it a lot. It sounds good and does a lot of cool stuff. I would be using it for home recording with my band and for live concerts. Do you guys think that it would be sufficient. I have a stereo amp in my bedroom i could use but if you guys have suggestions on other ideas i would love to hear them.

Please give me some more input on my scenario and what would be best for my use. I already told you what I want so if you guys would tell me what would be the best thing to for under 2000 bucks I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again for your previous inputs.

Alex
