OK, This is a silly question, but:

Is there any harm in putting a 10.5" reel on one side and a 7" reel on the other to spool up the 7" reel (i.e. take a 2500' pancake, put it on a reel, put a plastic 7" reel on the other hub, fill it up, rinse and repeat?)

The only problem will came when you want to stop the reels. The 7" reel in the take up side and the 10" in the supply reel. When FF is pressed the tape will go from the left to the right, and if you press STOP, the supply reel will stop later, so some tape can be supplied by it when the take up reel is stopped.

To avoid this, when the deck is in FF mode and want to STOP it, press RWD so that the tape slows down, and when is practically stopped, before starting to rewind, then press STOP.
