Hello, i stumbled upon this website looking for some guidance. I saw you recommended some books there and i looked them up. How would i go about choosing one? Which one provides the most in depth or most usefull descriptions and explanations for a beginner.
If you really want an education, get them all. The biggest thing I have learned over the last 5 years that I have been messing with this, is that there are no hard fast rules (there are, but if you know what you are doing you can bend them pretty far), and no one technique for doing anything. It's all on your ears and knowing how to track properly, and how to get the sound you're after. The books can point you in the general direction. After that, it's all in how you comprehend what you read, and how you apply it. I have never picked up a book. Everything I have learned has been through painful trial and error. Self discovery that you are not going to be the next American Idol/guitar god/next big thing and learning how to maximize what you do have are the most important things that I have learned. I still don't know how to use most effects plugins to maximum potential. But I can get what I need out of them. Just don't expect to go from know-nothing to audio engineer over night. It's not going to happen. Some learn faster than others, some never get it. But no one I know was an expert at mixing out of the box. Except for maybe Greg_L...
