mixing high hat into song

People many times will have at least two pairs of overheads and switch between them during songs, one maybe for choruses, one for verses.

Really? I seriously never heard of that one. Is this common?

Sure. I didn't make it up! But seriously, it is something that people do. The other thing to do is to have a few room mics to feed in and out of the mix during the song.

Try and have some idea of the possible impact of your words on people that bring way more to this site than they ever take from it.

Question for some of you drum pros.

In a song I'm working with, the high hat is closed during the verse and open during the chorus. Nothing special there. But the open high hat is MUCH louder, or maybe just the frequency it's in, it just overpowers stuff.

What do most people do when mixing this kind of situation? Should I compress the HH? Or just go in there and turn the volume of the HH down during the choruses?

Maybe you better re-read the thread and then realize that I was nothing but polite until people start cussing at me for something I already apoligized about. And why is it you feel the need to defend that? Several other people seem to concur that my original post was sufficient for them to help me out. And they did.
