I've just recorded a song on my digital recorder and transferred all the song data to my computer. I imported the song into Sonar and when I play it, it sounds awesome. But! When I look at the Peak and RMS meters on the master slider, they peak out at around 5.2 db's. If I were to lower the volume sliders on the individual tracks to bring it below the peak (the red) then the song would sound too soft. What could I do to make this sound better with out all the red lights? Any suggestions?

Depending on how many peaks there are above 0db and the source of them, you could try putting a limiter on the Master Bus. If that is too dramatic a chop, a multiband compressor might be a good tool to consider.

However, this is very likely going to be too soft anyway, once you export it and burn it to a CD. You are probably better off reducing the volume to get it peaking in the -3 to -6 range, and then let the volume issue be addressed in in the Mastering process.

Are the individual tracks clipping or just the master? Try turning down the master slider to stop the clipping, then turn your monitors up :)

That waas gonna be my suggestion. I don't know what type of monitors you have, but make sure the monitor level is set correctly. Also check your Amp or Mixer and ensure they are properly set too. Once that is checked, then you may need to fiddle with the software faders or add other Vst's.
