When I mix down from a Tascam 414 MKII it always ends up pretty quiet on the tape- is it fair game to go from the Line out of the four track to my 70 W per channel stereo receiver then to the cheapo stereo that has the tape deck in it? I want to avoid as much hiss as possible- Lord knows we have enough of that already.

The shortest route between two points is a straight line. Go from the lineouts of the 4 track straight into the inputs on the tape machine.

I think I know where you are coming from. Do what Brenton said and go directly to the tape deck. Make sure you have some good cables. I bought a seperate tape deck for mixing down to, just so i dont have to mess around with my stereo rig. Then I can mix down to the cassette and walk it over to the stereo and play it. I also have a seperate deck for recording off of napster(I'm to cheap to buy a CD burner right now). I picked up some nice tape decks on E-bay for $30 to $40 used and in mint condition. Stick with Sony, Denon, Yamaha.
