Mixing down with outboard processors

Hope I can pose this question properly...

Gear first...Delta/Omni 66 with a RNC compressor as an effects loop to the Omni breakout box. And Sonar 2.0XL.

What I would like to do is experiment with mixing down projects applying the RNC to it while still remaining in the digital domain (ie., out to compressor back in to PC.)

The only logical solution I can think of is to run the Omni's Mix Outs to the Line Ins to a stereo track in Sonar, then export it for "mastering" or CD burning, etc...

Any other possible methods? Do need to clarify?

By doing this you aren't really staying "in the digital domain" as you will be converting the signal to analogue and then back to digital when sending it out through the RNC.........

Or have I got hold of the wrong end of the stick?

You're right! But I don't see the big problem with not staying in the digital domain all the way. Bring back analog warmth!

If you're recording vocals, you should plug the s/pdif-cable into your ear so you stay in the digital domain.

If you have some decent A/D and D/A convertsers, there is no problem. Many pro studios still record using tape...

Unless you have some really great ADC's and DAC's, you will be far better off keeping your signal in the computer.
If you have SONAR XL you already have some great compressor plug-ins. I'd say use those.
Nothing wrong with experimenting, but I have no doubt you'll find that your results will be far superior using your plug-ins.

Thanks for all the help fellas. I tried plugging the s/pdif cable into my ear, but all I heard were trucker CB's and something about taking over the world.

Ya, I don't mind the compressor plugins, but the RNC is known for it's transparency, and since I just got it, I thought I'd try it out on a mix if possible. Usually by the time I'm done mixing, I don't need much compression, but I love a little experimentation. No big deal I guess.

u serious...i don't think theirs native plug-in made yet that can compete with an RNC

That's what I thought too. I'm no pro, but from what I've read soft compressors got a ways to go. That's why I was wondering about mixing with the RNC...
