Mixing down to my computer

i need to know what i need to mix down to computer like soft ware and cables and stuff. and if anyone has any software they would suggest , i would like something that would help get rid of tape hiss.i would also some at a pretty good price. please help me

Software : All that you need to mixdown is a wave editor like Sound Forge, wavelab (even the creative wave studio could do it but it's very limited). You can mix in stereo and add effect like compression, reverb etc.. too.

Cable : It depend mostly of your signal chain. Need to know what soundcard/interface you are using.

(need to know a little bit more about your setup, if you haven't buy anything yet there is TONS of options)
 
Get the Digi 001 and you'll be just fine. It comes with midi interface, sound card, breakout box with 8 ins/outs, 2 digital in/outs, monitor out, 2 preamps, and best of all it comes with ProTools LE software. All this for $800. Make sure you get the latest version, version 5.0.1
