Mixing down in Adobe Audition

I started using adobe audition because it was easy to select what devices to record with (I want to record with my primary card but play back tracks with my onboard sound). If anyone knows how to do this in Cubase SX or other software that has this feature then this could solve my problem aswell.

But in the case of using audition. When i try mixing down to mp3, it says the file is corrupt in windows media player or itunes, however I can play it with VLC media player. The strange thing is this didn't happen before when I mixed down to mp3. All i did was select one of the preset options with preset codecs, sample rate etc and it worked fine. But all of the presets have dissappeared. I don't know if this has anything to do with it.

Please help me out :) Like I said I'm open to suggestion for other software (windows) that has an easy to use sound device selector for playback/recording etc, As that would be an easier solution.

Hope thats clear :o Thanks.

I have a suggestion. Don't mixdown to mp3! Mixdown to a wave file. If you need an mp3 for web delivery/playing on your iPod, then convert the wave file into an mp3.

I thought that the more converting you do the more quality you lose?

EDIT: I have just tried converting to WAV, and I chose to use Windows PCM wav as that was the default choice. The other wav file types were:

Microsoft ADPCM
DVI/IMA ADPCM

When I convert it to WAV it works with VLC media player and Windows media player, but with itunes i get random noises.

Also Can anyone recommend a good free audio file converter?

usually you have to tick off the thing that says" release the driver in the background" in cubase

Okay I've found some good software and luckily if I convert to WAV then MP3 then it works on all progs, so thanks for that. :)

One more question, when converting to mp3, what bitrate is the best to use? At the moment I use 128 kbps and should i use Variable or Constant encoding?. Obviously I want good quality, but I also plan to put the mp3's on purevolume. So the bitrate has to be suitable for internet etc.

Thanks.
