I am familiar with some of the mixer brands...
Mackie, Soundcraft, Allen and Heath, Behringer...

Are there any good ones that I should know about?
I'm talking about mixers for my home studio, now, and stuff that isn't tens of thousands of dollars...

thanks gang

...and the price pointed there was fake. I bought a brand new MM1202 in shop for only US$182. A lot cheaper than stamped in the tag. :)

There are a lot of '90's vintage consoles from TASCAM that are available too.

You could do a lot worse. They're pretty decent boards.

90's vintage?

like what?
are there some models you have in mind?

TASCAM M-1600

TASCAM M-320 Older, but still a good console. The 320B has phantom power.

TASCAM M-2524

TASCAM M-2600

TASCAM M-3700

There is also the TASCAM M-1516 which I use and the M-1508 which is half of an M-1516. I really like the M-1516. There were none for sale on e-bay at this time. Most of these consoles you can get for a quarter to a third of what they sold for new. Most all have been maintained. Mine was $350. Sold new for $1299 in '93.

Some of these consoles are pretty substantial. I'm not sure how much console you need, but you probably won't need any more than the largest one provides. There are other, higher-end offerings from TASCAM, but you don't see them very often.

Sennheiser, you are awesome

thanks SO MUCH for looking those links up.

I'd LOVE to have the 3700....

Soundcraft

I found one of these (Soundcraft Rac Pac Folio) for 300 dollars plus custom SKB case, and then since I daudled and didn't buy it was gone the next day...

Just thought I would share the frustration...

Most of the stuff I buy on e-bay is "Buy it Now". I don't wait for it to get snached out from under my feet. Some things I will bid on, especially if there are several of the same item available. I shop often and browse the pages for specific pieces of equipment daily when I have some spare money.

It has to be at a good price to do this, because I'm not paying an over-inflated price on an unservicable piece of equipment that some one who hasn't done his homework would buy in a second.

Take advantage of some of the good stuff you find at e-bay with "Buy it Now". Just do your homework first. And keep shopping. The best way is to load the pge with "Most Recently Listed". The page is updated every 4-6 hours with new listings.

Alesis Studio 24

What do you guys think about this console?

The Alesis Studio 24 (or even the 32): I have seen a few of these, but does it compare to the big names?

Now forgive me, I just don't know about these consoles yet.
I'm learning!

I don't know anything about it. Do a search. There have been many topics on this desk in the past.

Jimmy, here is the M-1508 I mentioned in an earlier post. This just became available. It's a little high for "Buy it Now", you might want to bid. Ask questions before you do. I can tell you anything about the operation, but check with this guy first and see if he knows what the hell he's talking about. ask about condition too.

I'll see if there is an M-1516.

The guy is lying about the retail price. It was around $900 new.

TASCAM M-1508

You may want to look at a DDA also. You may be able to find one of their CS3 or CS8 models in your price range.

Not sure who you mean by big names because big names can equate to big money.

I have a Studio 24 which I like and the price has come down since I bought mine. When I got mine they had Mackie that was fairly close in price (don't remember what model) but the Studio 24 had a direct out AND direct in's on every channel. That really appealed to me and that's a feature I see on some "expensive" consoles but not at the price range of the 24. You have to live with 60mm faders but it's a compact console. The preamps are fine to my ears but then I've never had the luxury to have recorded using other brands. So all the talk about those preamps compared to those other preamps, on an on...I can't comment on that. And I would never comment on that unless I did some "recording" with them and not just checking them out in the music store.

There has been talk about people having channel crosstalk with Alesis consoles, but I have never experienced this. My recording mate has a Studio 32, again no problems.
These consoles sound really good to me and got me into recording without destroying my bank account. Ultimately I want to upgrade to something like a Ghost console. My 24 is about two years old now and has worked perfectly.

One comment about the direct outs. On the 24 they are unbalanced and they are balanced on the 32. Hasn't been a problem for me but I wanted to point that out.

At this price range I doubt you will find a console with as much flexibility as the 24 and 32.

If I were in the market right now I would take a serious look at the Soundcraft mixers "M" series. I haven't looked into them but people have been making good comments about them.

Good luck!

make sure you get a decent phonic brand mixer...for example the smaller once with no xlr are bad news...lol

getting ready to buy...

ok..been reading everyones messages, some good, most bad about BEHRINGER mixers. Been out of the game for 15 or 20 years and I am absolutely astonished at the available products. (the last time I was in a studio, I don't think "DIGITAL" was even in the english language) I have my eye on the behringer ub1204FX-pro and I need some quick feedback(pardon). I am getting a FOSTEX MR-8 for christmas and I am currently running CUBASIS a/v on a very fast H-P PC.

i personall have no problem with behringer... a lot of people on this forum especially dont like it i know that...ha

i have/use freaquently a beheringer mixer (eurorack). works fine/great for the homerecording i'm into right now. I expect to update all my gear perhaps in another year if i'm serious enough about it.

behringer

Finally someone admits to using a behringer. The way these guys talk, you'd think the behringer emits some sort of sonic hiss or 60Hz hum or something. Thanks for the info..

Have you heard Shack's stuff? You just described it perfectly ;) Just messing with you, Shack.

I wouldn't use an Alesis or Behringer but that's my preference. The first time you have sex you think that girl was the most amazing being put on this earth. Then after a few years you realize she was just a dime a dozen.

Satisfaction is all about perspective.
