Hi, I'm new to recording, and I need some advice for mixing. I recently purchased a tascam 488mkii, and I am thinking about getting a used tascam 102mkii for mixdown. Does anyone have any advice for other mixdown decks for under $300.
I want my music to eventually be on a cd, so i need some advice on how to put it on my computer. I have no idea how to do that, so any help would be great.
thanks,
watash

Assuming you have a PC desktop computer, one of these, a copy of this and a pack of CD blanks will set you back about $120.

You can't hardly do better than that.

Yo WAtash:

If you have the 488 MK box, you can mix down using IT! Or, did I forget how to use my old 488?

Seems to me that you can record up to 8 tracks and mix them. But, going to the PC would probably be better.

I dont think you can mix it down to stereo on the 488. But are there any recomendations as far as mixdown cassette decks go?

In my opinion you'd be foolish to invest in cassette technology with computers as cheap as they are.

Are you afraid to take the big leap and start using a computer as your mixdown deck?

Well I just like the idea of mixing down to tape, it seems oldschool and real. But i cant avoid computers forever so i dont really know.

I dug out my old 488 manual and there are 3 steps to the unit, on page 5 of the manual.

You're right. You need to mix down your recorded tracks to a two track tape deck. Many good decks out there that are not expensive. However, as mentioned in the postings, you can also route your tracks to a PC and use a program to burn your CDs.

I used to mix to a stereo tape deck and I had a couple of them, like Tascam and Sony.

You might think of sometime in the near future, after Xmas when prices drop again, to pick up a Yam DAW. That would get out out of tape into digital and the prices are fairly reasonable.

There are also a couple of Boss units with CD making built in that would do the job.

Tape to tape kind of miss the quality mark of digital CD; however, I used to come up with some nice mixes. As I recall, I had to push the volume. But, tape is tape.

You could get a digital tape deck, DAT, and DAT would work too. So, you have choices.

Happy New Year

thanks for the help green hornet, I think I'm going to go with a Tascam 2 track deck. by the way I have no idea what Watash or Watash Cannonball, I just thought it sounded cool. what is Watash Cannonball?

:D Yo Watash:

I was just playing a word game referring to the OLD song, Wabash Cannonball.

Watash - - Wabash

Retired English teachers, like me, like to do those things.

Maybe you can find a copy of the song on the net--it has been around a while.

Cheers,
Green Hornet
