Mixdown with a stereo for monitoring...

Hello, it is I and I am once again, in my virginity to recording, going to attempt a mixdown at a friend's house. He has some CD burning equipment and a fair soundcard. I was wondering if anyone could advise me about mixing down listening to a stereo for monitoring. The equipment is hooked up to his stereo and I've had nothing but unpleasant experiences mixing down so far. ON computer TO disc. Will I be able to get a fairly honest sound on a home stereo system? Are there any EQ settings or adjustments I should make on the stereo before mixing? He's not into recording; he's studying computer animation. I trust that the product will be superior to what I've done in the past with CD. We may plug in my studio going RCA jacks or Digital or possibly SCSI port. I will most likely use the RCA jacks because those are on the soundcard.

I'm gonna try all of this on Monday morning, but feel free to add anything after that point.

Please help me, friends.
 
ive never tried it on a stereo , but ive heard a lot of peoples stuff who have and it sounds great.. I think it helps to know the stereo your working on .. by this i mean , if its a very bassy stereo ..that sort of thing. Something ive noticed with my mixes , i mixdown on a set of alesis monitor ones , then i put the cd on in my room and its got a heap more bass .. so ive just learnt what kind of bass levels are acceptable.. i mean i dont pump the hell out of the bass on the monitors cos i know on most stereos it'll come out a bit more bassy than on the mixdown.. I spose a lot of this comes down to selecting very very accurate monitors , though i havent heard bad things about the monitor ones. Sounds like the room your in has a lot to do with the sound u end up with .. i mean the room u mixdown in , simply cos it can fool u .. But over all i think a stereo can do the job , definetly proper monitors work better , but i think it could be done quite professionaly on a stereo .. good luck with it.

You definitly have to know the speakers. THis is tru with any situation. I my opinion, as far as home stereo speakers, the crappier the better. (Well not really :D) But I'm sure that I could make a mix on my Technics or some other "lower end" models and have it translate better than if it was mixed on a set of really nice BOSE speakers.

But definitly check the mixes on another system, in the car, a boombox, in headphones, just listen....

And get some 20/20's or some M1 Actives or the Tannoys or the Mackies as soon as you can!

Hey, you guys, I just wanted to say that we mixed and recorded the disc and it sounds GREAT!!! I'm so happy. I finally have something to show for all of my songwriting hardship!!! My friend did it on computer so I might try to post an MP3. By the way, how do you do that?
