Ok, so I have a Tascam 488 mk II but I need something to mix it down to...I've been doing it straight into my laptop which has produced some crap results (for example a squeaky sound on the bass) so I'm looking for a CD recorder (I think!) so I can mix to that, then rip the contents to the laptop - could any point me in the right direction and recommend me something? thanks!

Cd recorder isn't necessary, unless that's what you want to do.

A usb/firewire audio interfaces with two line inputs will do the job and sound a lot better than going straight into the laptop.

ahh thanks, that would be much easier. are there any good (but cheap) ones out there you'd recommend?

Echo audiofire2 and presonus firestudio mobile both have at least two line inputs.

I'm not sure if there's anything cheaper and simpler.

Do you have any interest in recording on your pc? The firestudio has two good preamps as well if you do.

The E-MU 0204 does two line level inputs at very good quality--only a single mic pre if you ever want to go that way though.

So I'd literally just run 2 cables from the line out of the 488 into the usb interface which plugs into the computer? There's a firestudio on ebay £120, worth a bid?

The Presonus Firestudio is a great little interface if you need those features. However, before bidding, make sure your laptop has a firewire interface and that the chip set is compatible...firewire can be a bit fussy.

If you don't need the two good mic preamps, then the E-MU I mentioned is a bit cheaper even new from a standard retailer like HERE. You might find even cheaper if you hunt the web.

And, yes, just two cables from your 488 to the Line In will do it. You'll need some DAW software on your computer, but for two tracks only to eventually burn to CD or convert to MP3, even Audacity (freeware) would do fine.

Yeh, above is correct.

Firestudio is a great little unit. I got one for £150 and I'm super please, but if you've no need for mic preamps in it, it might be worth shopping around.
You could get something cheaper, like that E-Mu maybe?
