Any new news with users of this unit?

I've been tracking with my AKAI DPS16 and it is fantastic for location recording; the preamps great, effects are nice, submixes are easily handled, and there's plenty of horsepower; but final mixing, mixdown and writing to CD seems to be full of too many workarounds for me. The unit was originally designed to send submixes to tape, and the CD/R works very well to back up the disc. It's not so great at producing a multitrack transfer disc.

I believe I can use this to record up to eight main tracks (plus a boatload of virtual tracks) in 24 / 96, and then assign the four Aux returns, the two monitor sends and the two main sends to individual tracks or submixes, pumping a total of eight analog tracks at a time to my computer. All I have right now is a Soundblaster card, long on the waiting list for replacement.

So I'm eying the Terratec Phase88. $ 300.

Any thoughts?

Sorry, I've never used the Phase 88. I do use the Phase 28 (the 88's little brother). I like it a lot, as it does everything I need it to do.

I do like the 88, but it was just more than I needed.

Thanks!

Did you replace the existing soundcard, or is your Phase 28 resident with the original card? I'm wondering if a Terratec would co-exist peacefully with a SBLive card in a multiple use computer.

This went into a new system, though it does have built-in sound (NForce2). I originally kept it enabled so I could make sure all the output channels worked (my computer build area is far away from my studio). I.e., loop the out into the in of the NForce2 and use the headphone of the NForce2 out to listen. I never had any problems, but then it isn't an SB Live! either. ;)

Is there a particular reason you need the SBLive! still? Games? I'd rather stick with basic sound on games and rip that SB junk out, but that's me.

It might be a good idea to contact Terratec and just ask if there are any known issues with that configuration. The Phase 88 isn't a cheap soundcard, so hopefully they'll be helpful.
