hi,
I'm working on a recording for a punk band I'm in. Can someone give these songs a listen and let me know what you think of the mix? I'm using a Gadget Labs Wave/8-24 and Vegas Audio 2 but I don't have a decent monitoring system.

thanks!
Aaron

the songs are:

if you're bored :)

Aaron,

Listened to the first 2 so far. The first reminded me of "Blink 182" or something like that. The backing vocals were cool,

BUT the second song was REALLY cool. Reminded me of vintage D.R.I. or something. As far as the mix goes, It sounded o.k. The drums maybe up a bit, not the cymbals, just the snare and bass drum maybe..........maybe not on second listen. Others can advise you better than I, but I like heavy music and just figured I'd give you a shout about that second tune. I like that second song a lot and will check out the rest later and try to be more detailed.

peace.

whoa.....!!!

listening to the 2nd song (influneced by sabbath)....

I guess its ok....:D I'd take a little country *twang* in there somewhere if it is possible. Big market for this, I imagine...and if you could pull this off with a good live show...I'd be jumping off the stage too....

good[interesting] stuff...

yeah I like your tunes/style...band sounds pretty good.

In terms of the mix...it is pretty raw. which...isn't neccesarily a bad thing - but in this case i think I would try to give it a little "sheen". definately nothing like a Blink 182 sound...that's overproduced. but...I just think the whole thing sounds a little thin.

The levels are good...but...the drums/bass/guitars all sound "thin" to me. drums sound kinda distant...the bass esp. on the first song doesn't have a lot of "punch"...

What kind of mics were you using? I imagine you could probably get a little thicker mix with the equip you had...just in how you track it..maybe some mic placement/eq issues.

thanks for the feedback!
I'm pretty new to recording so one of my problems is I don't exactly know what sound I really want and also don't know how to get it when i figure it out.

what would you do, wes480, about the lack of sheen and the thin sound?

on the the first 2, I didn't do my usually compression and limiting of the whole mix because we're sending those out to be mastered. Is that usually the right thing to to? I don't want to over-compress and have the mastering engineer have to fix my mistakes. On the other songs that I listed I ran them through a bus compressor (waves rennesiance) and then through The waves ultra-maximizer.

I really don't remember what the drums mics were because they were a borrowed set. bass was a combined line out and sm57, guitars are sm57, and vocals were done with a rented condensor (sorry , can't remember the brand but it sure LOOKED expensive!)
