First off, I'm a beginner...so have mercy. Anyway, I'm ready to mix-down from my Tascam 424 III.Can I mix down directly to a CD recorder? Also, what is a rewriteable CD recorder? Can someone help?

Howdy Miles,
To answer your question.. Yes you can mix directly to a CD recorder. Question #2: A Tascam RW5000 is able to use both CD-r and CD-rw disk. It is a stand alone unit that has controls not unlike those of a cassette deck and can be used like a cassette deck, and it is a little easier to use.

Hi Miles, I assume you have a computer, but of course you could be posting from a library. What you should seriously consider is getting a quality soundcard and mixing down, or from, or both, on you computer. If you are not trying to use way too many tracks or heavy processing on the computer, you really don't need much computer, and the flexibility will blow you away. My used machine is just a lowly P133 with an IDE clunker drive, but I can play back a good 16 tracks, and the GINA card has 20-bit converters and digital I/O. You do of course need software, but that can also be found used or shareware. The real advantafe of computer recording/mastering is the flexibility. Once you have it right on the computer, it's a piece of cake to dump on to DAT or CD. I would suggest finding either soundforge or wavelab. You can probably get used copies of older versions, which are still great.
