hey guys,
i just finished recording an album on my tascam 688 (cassette). Now, I know how to transfer a mixed stereo track to my computer, but I was wondering how much the soundcard quality and the quality of the cable from the 688 to my computer matter.

Should I buy a good quality cable? (brands??) and what criteria should my soundcard meet at least? I don't want to lose any of those precious tones we worked so hard for!!!

Please tell me everything you think is worth knowing about this low budget transferring aspect!

btw. i'm using audicity, if that helps...

Does the Tascam have balanced connections?

If so then I would use that as my starting point. Get a sound card that has balanced audio inputs.

Good analog to digital converters are important. I can't help you there because I use a digital mixer for my A/D conversion and go into my PC via ADAT lightpipe but I'm sure that there's loads here who can point you in the right direction.

The M-Audio Delta series have good A/D converters. E-Mu makes good cards as well. I'm no expert though.
