mix down format

Greetings everyone,

I have recently purchased a Tascam 388 (analog 8 track) and will be spending most of my time figuring out how to operate it and get good sounds out of it. But eventually I will learn, and I will want to mix down (make master copy) all the tracks to another format, preferably a CD so that I can make use of a friend's CD duplicator.

Can anyone recommend a good CD recorder deck to mix down to or perhaps another approach if this is not ideal? The Tascam has XLR and RCA stereo outputs.

Thanks ...

Something like the hard-drive based Alesis Masterlink (ML9600) is perfect for that purpose.

* It will create RedBook compliant CD's.

* It has some DSP options for additional "sweetening" after mixdown.

* It'll record in 24-bit at several sample rates.

* It's ridiculously cheap since about a year ago.

Another option is to get a good A/D converter, recording software, and run mixes into a computer. It will give you more options if you decide later that 8 tracks isn't enough, as well as the ability to comp tracks digitally and fly them back to tape, bounce down, etc. While initally more expensive than a Masterlink or DAT machine, the investment could pay off later.

Mixes can then be stored in 24 bit on a data CD, or you can use it to create audio CDs.

Thanks for your input. Turns out that my church has a couple of Alesis masterlinks that they may want to part with in the future in order to purchase something simpler. I'm only wanting to mix down to CD for my band's demos, not expecting to win any production awards. Is this equipment overkill for my purposes? Why not just a regular CD recorder?

Thanks...
