Hi All,

I am really really new at this. I've always been playing guitar, but computers is just NOT my thing. They seem to be temperamental- i follow the rules and for some reason it doesn't work... then i try later and bang! It works! And the next day no, sorry, not working again... now i know it is my own Fallable brain that is to blame and i don't WANT to chuck my computer through the wall... and i have read all the posts in this section and can't find anything that answers my question.

So while i remain a faithful student of researching the manual, i'd really appreciate anyone spelling out the answer to my problem for me. So it goes like this. Open Reaper (which interestingly i converted to reading previous posts, away from ProTools complicated trial version) I add new track. I record enable new track. SO far so good. I lay down the guitar. I add another new track, record enable that one. Then i try to record vocals off that, but it records over both tracks and i can't hear the guitar to sing over the top over. What am i doing wrong?

I'm using Reaper, M-Audio Fast Track, through which i'm putting headphones and a mic. I was putting my guitar through it too, with a fancy new pickup, but i couldn't work out how to turn off the tuner so the battery went flat. Yes, i am pretty much hopeless. So i am recording the guitar through the mic. Is that the problem maybe? Sigh, i'll keep working on it but i would REALLY appreciate any assistance, as i don't have any techie friends, so you guys are really my last hope of putting down some music, aside from me fluking it.

Thanks in advance, imaginary chocolate coated coffee beans as a gesture of my gratitude :)

You need to unarm the other tracks before you arm and record on the third one.

I would have answered if you'd been offering just plain imaginary chocolate, but I don't like the choc-coated coffee beans... :laughings:

Wouldn't the chocolate clog up the ol' percolator?

Heck nobody else wants them I love them send them this way !!!!!!

Oh wait ..... their only imaginary! Dang , never mind I'm full of those. thanks anyway. What else ya got?

Hi Mandy and Welcome!

I'm trying to think of something else it might be 'cause I could go for those imaginary chocolate covered coffee beans, but I think Supercreep nailed it. Reaper is going to send your input signal to every track that's armed for recording, and you're not going to hear those tracks playing back (because it thinks you want to record to them). Once you get the hang of Reaper it just kinda does what you want it to, so keep at it. A few quirks here and there, but pretty intuitive all things considered (no I'm not connected to them in any way, but I am a fan!).

Seems to me this hobby can use a little more participation from the female half of the race!!! :) SO... when you have something to listen to, please post it in the MP3 Mixing Clinic forum!

PS - If Supercreep's suggestion turns out not to solve your problem, post back with a few more details so we can have another shot at those imaginary coffee beans!

So like a woman... they buzz in, get us all excited that there's an actual new female hanging around that needs assistance, and then bugger off, never to be heard from again...

To be fair, most of the n00b drive-by posters are male.
