i am about to buy a new computer for school, and i'm thinking about using this one strictly for recording.

what are the minimums for say, motherboard/processor speed, ram, all that stuff? like how much would i need to keep it going smoothly, while recording probably up to 8 tracks at a time?

Hey Tyler,
Try doing a search for "minimum setup" or something along those lines. I tried it just now and got a whole bunch of results. Best of luck man.

what do you have in your computer right now?

its hard to say exactly what would be the minimum ( i dont' think anybody strives to have the minimum set up).

that said, something like a middle of the road barton cpu, 256 megs of RAM, and a decent soundcard MIGHT get you by.

amd athlon xp 1800+ (1.54 ghz)
256 mb of ram
2 120 gig hard drives
some nvidia video card i believe

I doubt you'll be able to record 8 tracks at a time with less than 512MB.

yeah i agree, it would be a stretch. I use basically the same computer here at work, an amd 1800+ (i dont' know how bartons compare to athlons) and with 245 mg of RAM. this computer is pretty hurtin and is slow. maybe i'm used to my home machine but i wouldn't want to be doing 8 tracks on this hunk.

With some tweaking (and some more RAM for sure), the setup you have now would go a long ways. There are numerous posts in this forum about tweaking windows for audio applications. (I assume you are running XP?). One thing that I did was setup a couple of hardware profiles, one for everything normal (E-mail, games, internet, etc...) and then one strictly for audio recording. In the audio hardware profile you can completely disable all of your internet and networking hardware, then you can disable every service and process and program that starts up that has anything to do with anti-virus or firewall (because you won't need them if you don't have internet capabilities on anyways). I was amazed at how much CPU efficiency it saved. Check it out. You might be able to save some money on a computer and spend it elsewhere on a good soundcard, and some good mics and stuff.

oh i know that i need to upgrade the ram at least.

thanks for all the replies. anything else i should know?
