You are looking for a semi-rigid board with about a 3-5 pounds per cubic foot density if you are building bass traps. If you are putting it INSIDE the wall to cushion the air space you want the fluffy stuff.
 
Agreed; but get thick enough "fluffy stuff" to slightly compress when the first panel is put on, and watch where you put your vapor barriers (like the Kraft paper or foil that's on most fiberglass insulation) - any questions, check here

Exactly. For instance, an R-19 (5.5") compressed into a standard 3.5" cavity (2x4 walls) will give you damping, cavity resonance control, and keep the cost reasonable.
