Grumpy Mod
This is an experimental track and one of a batch I'm working on in collaboration with a violin player, Miranda Wageman.

The tune was composed by both of us, and the objective was to use only the violin throughout the track.

Here is the video:

For the technically minded, the only mike used was an Audio Technica 853u. There is no EQ or compression on the lead melody part.

The percussion was made by sampling various noises off the body of the violin, then creating a drumkit from these in Battery.

Miranda played the bass line on her violin. We then used a pitch-shifter to drop it two octaves.

The background pad is a series of recorded long notes assembled into the appropriate chords.

It was recorded in Reaper via a Presonus Firepod.

The video was compiled in Vegas from a vareity of South American Youtube clips.

I loved the percussion sounds..the beginning sequence was excellent..my modern music tastes heard a breakbeat playing in the background but even when the violin came in as the main body I can really appreciate this

really excellent gecko..Ive nothing to say on the tune/mix, Id maybe have made the whole video B&W, the dancers outside the cafe were captivating

thank you for sharing, very enjoyable

i think Im on my fourth view now...damn this is really good, can I sample some of this?

Interesting percussion - you'd never guess the source. One spot in the beginning sounded a wee flat on the violin. Although I've heard deliberate dissonent pieces on other songs....so maybe it's deliberate? The rest sounded very sweet. Cool video montage but the music was the outstanding part...:D:D:D:D:D No mix ssues from me - nice levels and tones....

Wow. That sounds really very good. Having read your explanation, I can kind of make sense of how you assembled all of the sounds, but I would never have guessed had you not explained it.

The reverb and/or room sound on everything is really nice, particularly the lead violin parts. Great sense of space.

What is that occasional underwatery sounding bit in the background?...like at 3:44-3:45 for example...

Thanks for listening and your kind and generous comments.

@KC: feel free to sample whatever you want. It would be interesting to hear bits used elsewhere. I'm pleased you watched it four times . . . it makes up for those who could only last a few seconds!

@ido: it's possible that there was a flat spot, because I don't get too obsessed by pitch-perfection. However, I did go back and have a relisten to find the spot you were referring to, but it eluded me, so maybe it was a deliberate bit of assonance (which I am not averse to). Maybe you could refer me to the spot, I can double check.

@heatmiser: the 'underwatery' sound comes from one of the presets in Guitar Rig: psycho something. Generally not a very usable preset, but good for doing weird. For reverb I use a Timeworks plugin. It's an old one now, a DX plugin that I got around the time I first went digital using Logic in the late nineties. For all its age, it is still my "go to" reverb plug in.

Great editing to the flix. Loved the 1st pause!
Nicely organic sound.
Technology used well I say.
Excellent.

Very, VERY nice. I love the etherial feel to the piece. Vey well put together.

Wow, mike. You've really captured a lot of detail of the violin. The body, bow across the strings. Love the pizzicato parts. Lot of talent on both sides of the mic.

Sorry, but I like the song better when I'm not watching the video. Allows me to focus more on what's happening musically.

thanks for sharing.

Thanks rayc, trackrat & chili.

@Chili: the detail in the violin is almost an accident. Miranda (violinist) played in Western Australia, and was dissatisfied with the sound she'd been getting when playing live. She tried out various pickups, mikes etc., and ended up settling on an AT853u, which is actually intended as an ensemble mike (like, for choirs and stuff). She brought it around to show me, so I said, "let's use it ands see what happens." I was immediately astounded by the clarity and detail it delivered, with no need for massaging . . . so I went out and bought a pair straight away!!

This is absolutely awesome. Love the violin sound and that is one hell of a player. Really glad I got to hear this.

The violins are great, they really evoke a mood. I like the vid too, esp the hot chick dancing with the fat bloke with the bad haircut. Implies there's still hope for us yet.

Cool piece
