When playing back one or more MIDI tracks, particularly when they are being looped and I am trying to play an audio part over the top, the MIDI track quality begins to gradually deteriorate and I have to press stop. When I re-start its fine.

Any ideas?

I'm just taking a stab in the dark here, but which VST Wrapper are you using.. if it is the Cakewalk supplied one for Sonar 3, you might want to try the update... I think the first update (which is now included in the 3.1 patch) corrected some issues with latency when using the VST wrapper.. just a thought.

It's the VST with HS 2002.

I can't believe it! After all that trouble sorting out the latency with audio you're now saying I'VE NOW GOT IT WITH MIDI!!! Aaaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhh.

Run the bath and pass me the razor blades! ;- )

Latency is everywhere.. work it out.. the signal has to travel somewhere, when you press a key on the keyboard and electrical pulse is sent down a cable, that then comes into the sound card/break out box, it's then converted into something that the computer can recognise then it has to go through the drivers then through the layers of the program.. all of that takes a little time.. then there is the time it takes for the program to produce the sound (and with the VST wrapper, that will add to that) then for you to hear it.. hence latency... it's the devil of PC recording!

I'm still very much a newbie, but why should it do it now? I was using MIDI (only) on my very first machine which was a 250 Celeron with 64 bit RAM. I have always understood that MIDI took very little juice from your machine.

What I can't understand is why these MIDI tracks play fine for around ten cycles of the loop and then begin to deteriorate, even with no audio tracks on the same composition.

True, but the softsynths you're using is stealing most of your CPU cycles.

If these MIDI tracks control softsynth, then I would check those synths...
