I am not too sharp with MIDI - so Im not sure if this is a hardware, software, etc. problem. I feel like an idiot asking

Basically I have the MIDI out on a keyboard connected to the MIDI In on a Delta 1010. When I attempt to record - I can see that signals are coming into Cubase SX - but I cant hear anything. Additionally - when I try to play the recording back I hear nothing.

Is there any way I can hear the VST thru my board? In other words - how can a MIDI controller be setup using VSTs so that when I hit a note - I hear it thru my nearfield monitors? Or after its been recorded I can play it back thru the nearfields

Thanks so much!!

You also have to connect the MIDI Out on Delta to MIDI In on your keyboard. Also, in order to echo the MIDI input to Cubase SX to the output, you'll have to set the MIDI track on the correct MIDI channel to either Monitor or Record in SX.

Good luck.

Thanks Shades - basically, logically, I see a signal going from the keyboard to the soundcard and back to the keyboard. Im not sure how VSTs get added. What is the reasoning for the signal to go back to the module/controller/etc?

In summary I want to:
Play a controller, have it sound like another instrument (VST), which I can hear and mix thru my system.
It seems like Cubase only will allow it to hang out with the MIDI In and Out if its assigned as MIDI (thus I cant have it play thru my mixer)

Thanks again

There really isn't one. Plus you keyboards midi out into the Delta's midi in. Cubasse showed show its receiving midi data if you have your ports setup correctly. If you open a VST instrument, it should play.

I think. :)

If you want to hear the sounds coming out of your module on playback, you need to connect the MIDI out of your interface to the MIDI in to your module... to me a module is something that actually makes sound. Now, if you're referring to a dumb controller (meaning a keyboard that doesn't produce its own sounds) then there is no reason.

I just upgraded to SX myself and haven't tried any VSTi's yet, I'll mess around with it this evening and let you know.

Thanks. I do think the key differences are the dumb controller and the VST (vs. a "smart" controller and a hardware module)

OK,

In order to hear the VST instrument you're playing, first make sure the track is set to either Monitor or Record. In inspector, make sure that you select the VST instrument for the OUT port, and for IN make sure to select the correct MIDI port to which your MIDI controller is connected to... what options you have will depend on your MIDI setup.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Shades..I was all over the country the past couple weeks...I will try it out when I get a chance..I appreciate it a whole heck of a lot
