OK - From what I can tell I can't get real time Midi info from my V-Amp like you can from a keyboard controller. (I can only use the Midi to adjust the settings)

So my question is, Is there any way to convert MIDI information into a format that can be input into the V-Amp to control and play simulated sounds other than live performance?

Sorry if it is a stupid question but I know I can compose on some software (SONAR or other) by entering with a keyboard or other inputs then play back and have the software 'play' the exact thing back through the keyboard. Can I not control the V-Amp in a similar way? It's just digital communications right?

I'm not familiar with V-Amp, but my reasonable guess would be - no, it's impossible. Midi is not sound. It's info that describes what sound should be performed. So, in order for anything to perform midi track, this thing needs to have some sound samples built in. I guess V-Amp doesn't have any built in sound samples. It only alternates the audio signal. You can playback midi on the keyboard because keyboard does have built in sound samples that it uses. So, once you send your audio signal to V-Amp, you can't convert it back to midi. For this you need a perfect sound recognition technology, but the little problem here is that... it's not created yet :).

As neon glow says: the V-Amp affects audio signals, and various parameters can be controlled with MIDI messages, but it has no MIDI sounds on it, and MIDI messages contain no audio data...

As far as I know, the midi used here is for controlling your patches, but not to send music information like a keyboard controller.

What you were hoping to achieve might be capable through the Roland GI-20 ( Midi Guitar Interface )

Also Roland have a new guitar synth (GR-20), which may also be what you're after. This is the equivalent to a keyboard controller, with a guitar. Listen to the demos.

Hopefully, this is of use.

Great - thank you all for the info. I wasn';t sure what I was after was possible - I figured I needed additional tools.

Thanks for the recomendations!
