MIDI tracks in logic audio please help

Hi guys,

I have logic audio silver 4.6, my problem is that when I create a new MIDI track the record button doesn't appear, I checked all the options in the visualization menu and they're all enabled.

Please help.

Are you talking about record button next to the track name like you see on the audio tracks? If so, there is none. With the MIDI tracks simply highlight the track you want in the arrange window and push the record button located on the transport window. Audio tracks have that button mainly because the audio files recorded are stored in a file designated by the Set Audio Path dialog, whereas MIDI data does not require a path, as it is stored in the LSO (Logic Audio Song) file, which is stored for each project, and contains all other relevant info such as, effects settings, audio position data etc. When an audio track is Enabled with its respective Record button logic will check to see if you have specified a recording path, and will also check to make sure the recording inputs are set for that particular track, and won't engage till both conditions are set. MIDI channels will record regardless of whether or not MIDI devices are attached. Hope this helps, if not give me more info, and I'll try to help you out.

I have another question, how could I insert an effect in a MIDI track, do I need to convert it into an audio file?

Yes you can do that or add MIDI effects. Go into the Track Mixer, and open the Track menu from the Menu bar and check ADD GS/XG Effects. Now on the right side of the Mixer will be new drop down boxes for these effects. You can then use the controls on each MIDI track to adjust these, and I believe the default Logic settins for those top knobs are reverb, and chorus (They can be reassigned though to any MIDI CC#. However I don't know wether or not Logic will let you apply these effects if you are only using a GM MIDI synth (Hardware or Software).

The other alternative is to transport that MIDI data to an Audio Instrument track and use an instrument or sampler with the sounds you wan't. I will almost always write my MIDI stuff using my soundcards synth (To keep the load off the CPU while writing), then when I'm ready to mix, I'll send my song data to like my Yamaha S-YXG50 Soft-synth, or to Sampletank, or any other sound specific instruments. I personnaly am a huge fan of SampleTank, because you can setup 1 instance of Sampletank on an Audio Instrument track, and using just that one plugin opened only once assign 16 MIDI tracks to it with different Samples for each track. So then I disable SampleTank, then I can just write my MIDI tracks, and all I have to do to change the sounds are select a different MIDI driver (Soundcard or my XG), or simply just select No Driver, and take the SampleTank plugin out of Bypass, to hear it, and add any Logic (VST or DX) effects to it. Of course if you want effects on just certain instruments, you need to put those on seperate Audio Instrument tracks, or just use the ones in Sampletank. Of course many other samplers have these same features to some extent or another. Hope this is of some help.

I will give a try, I'm using emu mo-phatt + novation A station as MIDI generators, I would like to add some fx especially for live performances, so I can control all my stuff with logic.
