I have an old casio with MIDI on it and i want to use it in my protools with xpand!2 but my compy doesn't have any midi ports, I bought a dirt cheap MIDI to USB converter but it did not work, any suggestions? do i just need to buy a keyboard with USB? Help!

Which Casio do you have? All of my ancient MIDI Casios work with the MidiSport 4x4 or MOTU micro lite.

Hi,

I wouldn't give up on the gear you already have just yet. It could be that you still don't have something set up correctly. It's unlikely to just plug and play. Depending on the system, there could be USB/Midi drivers to sort out, the Casio may need to have something set, and the computer and DAW need to be recognising the input too. Have you set anything up for midi before, or is this a first try? You could post all your specs (Casio model, your computer's operating system, etc) and see if anybody here has experience of setting up something similar. It isn't necessarily complicated, but you may just have missed a step.

Use MIDI-OX to see if MIDI messages are getting into your PC from the USB box in the first place. MIDI-OX is useful for figuring out where the signal path failed, what channel the device is on, etc. A lot of times I have to turn one of the Casio devices off and back on to get MIDI output from it.

First basic question - did you select the Midi-to-USB device as your input device in PT?
