I've got Sonar set up as the Master and my Roland RS-50 as the slave, followed all steps in the Sonar and Roland manuals regarding MIDI Sync and I am getting better at this but I have another problem :(

I set my RS-50 to "Perform" in order to hear my MIDI sounds in Sonar but I am unable to record using the sound I want because I always get the piano sound when in this case I want tubular bells. When I switch the RS to "Patch", I get the tubular bells but then my other MIDI tracks do not play in Sonar.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a tutorial ANYWHERE on the web that puts this stuff in laymans terms?

Man, I never realized how much there is to learn regarding MIDI.

thanks in advance

This is what I found on the Roland website. Seems a little clearer than their usual indecipherable manuals...

RS-50 QuickStart

The key to what you're trying to do is to get into 'multi' mode in the patch side. There you should be able to figure out how to set up a multi-timbral (several sounds at once, each on it's own midi channel) patch and once you save it you'll have it until you decide to overwrite it.

One important thing to do is to dig into the Utility page and find the 'local' or 'local control' software switch and turn it to 'off'. This breaks the connection between the keyboard and the sounds inside --- the state you want the keyboard to be in for sequencing use.

I know it seems overwhelming, but take it one step at a time and you'll be making midi music like a pro in no time.

scientist,

Thanks for your help. Last night the hamster wheel finally started turning upstairs and it clicked. I figured it out and now my frustration level is close to nill. What a relief.

Thanks again :D :D
