know of a good soft synth compatible? want better midi sounds. using windows 98. any freeware out there? thanks

Welcome to the board, Stormy...

With soundblaster Live, you only need to load / unload soundfonts to your audioHQ to improve the MIDI sound of your card. By default, SB Live! will put the 2MB GM soundfont as initial :)

How to do that, Jaymz ?

I hope you have installed the latest driver, and the AudioHQ application. Open your AudioHQ application (Comes with your SB Live! installation CD or download from www.creative.com) open the soundfont application, and load new soundfont file (*.sf2) into synth bank.

Where can I have the soundfont files, Jaymz ?

Check your Creative's installation CD. There's some interesting soundfonts included as a demo. There's also several site offering great soundfont files, free to download... :)

www.thesoundsite.net

www.hammersound.net

We can talk about it detail latter... Hope it helps :)

the MIDI thing, first! but i am away from home until next week.(ARRRGH--no music). Yep, I am a cakewalker (do you have ESP? I don't, but I do have ESPN and ESPN2).
I will def. post back with results. It won't be until end of next week, though. cheers.

soundfonts

Replying as promised. No fonts on the CDrom for soundcard. Also did not find AudioHQ on Cakewalk CD. I have been attempting to download GM soundfonts from the soundsite.net and hammersound.net but am getting could not find page errors. I will keep trying. I saw a CD specifically designed to work with SBLive for about $15 I might get. Thanks again.

ESP ? ESPN ? what was that :)

Anyway, Stormy, you might look on the wrong CD :o You won't find AudioHQ in Cakewalk CD :D It's in Creative's SB Live! Installation CD :D and so the soundfonts :) unless you have SONAR 2 XL (which came with LiveSynth Pro DXi and Sonic Implants soundfonts samples), you hardly can find soundfonts in your Cakewalk CD :) What's your Cakewalk version anyway ?

BTW, I can open thesoundsite.net and hammersound.net just fine :) But sometime (specially if you're under firewall) you can't acces their site due to different connection port used (8080). I'm also behind firewall, and must ask permition from my admins to open the port 8080 for me :)

i have an audigy card (came with the computer) how do i hook up a midi keyboard, or how to i make the midi work with it? if you can't tell i have no idea how to use midi.

You need the optional Joystick/MIDI cable :)

Audigy MIDI Out --> Keyboard MIDI In

Keyboard MIDI Out --> Audigy MIDI In

In order to gain a good use of MIDI, you're gonna need some MIDI application. Eg. Cakewalk, Cubase, NTrack, etc... Make sure your keyboard is capable of multitimbral ( sounding multi instrument at once )... Preferable GM compatible for beginer :)

Gotta go now...

Reply to James Argo....

Nope, Audio HQ and soundfonts not on the install CD...they gave me the wrong one/it was installed at shop and they had to get the drivers emailed to them by Creative.

I am back to cakewalk pro 7. Had big difficulties with Home Studio 2002.

I will try the other sites with my work computer. Thanks.

stormy my friend...

I know right person to answer your question here :)

He's BluesMeister - often found in Cakewalk forum of this BBS. He has your setup (used to be using Cakewalk pro 7 and leaps to Cw Home Studio 2002). He's very helpfull Aussie. He's also one of the best Virtual Sampler expert of the BBS. You may want to PM him, or page him in Cakewalk forum :)

reply re: SB LIVE/Audio HQ

Actually, I think the problem is the CD that came with my soundcard has wrong driver and I cannot get Audio HQ to work. It says "reinstall soundcard driver" but I am unable. Is there a place to dowload SB Live driver? I went to creative.com and soundblaster.com and didn't find it. Thanks.
BTW I did download alternate General MIDI bank. Cannot use it yet do to above error.

I have SB Live!(CT4670) but I don't seem to be able to find the AudioHQ application on my pc that you are referring to. I also cannot find my installation CD. :(
Is the AudioHQ application available for download?
Do I need it?

Yes. You can find it here...

Though you don't need it ONLY to have the card work in Windows (Windows will recognize the card and install it's version of driver), but YES, you're gonna need this application to tweak most of the card's feature. There's also similiar "unofficial" driver & application do the job (KX-Project driver, etc) but so far, Creative's AudioHQ applicatin is the standard, as it comes from the card's manufacturer. You're gonna need it if you want to adjust amount of memory (RAM) to be used for soundfonts, etc. Without it, Windows will staticaly limit the amount to 2MB initial (for GM bank only).
