I posted this message in the recording forum but this forum would be a better place.

I have recently bought a Casio wk-3000 keyboard and I have computer with Windows ME. I also use a music editing software called Magix Playr Delux. I have used the computer and the Magix software for about 3 years. I have installed the software that came with the midi input cables (Yamaha). The input from the keyboard goes through the USB port on the front of the PC. I have the connections hooked up properly and the indicator light on the Midi cables indicate the signal is traveling to the computer. I cannot record anything from the keyboard when I am in the Magix software. The recording bars do not register a signal when I play. I also do not hear my keyboard in my computer speakers. (should I?) I have tried to change the recording settings in my computer and the midi device is not an option listed as a choice on the drop down box for recording. It is listed in the Midi Playback section but the setting is not saved after I exit. Is the problem with the Magix software or do I need a new sound card that will recognize Midi for recording? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

midi recording

I had a similar problem on the same O/S using a casio synth and Cakewalk music creator. The midi option did not display under devices. It turned out I had a sound card that did not see midi. I had to install a new sound card. Or you could try reinstalling the drivers for your current sound card. Also in Me try double clicking on the speaker icon and making sure that in recording volume settings that you have synth or mix input or "what you here" selected. Also check in volume controls that your midi outputs are not muted. By the way you should be able to here your synth through your speakers but there will be delay. So if you find it irritating just turn the volume down on your synth.

because MIDI is not for transferring audio its for transfering information between the devices

Does midi transfer audio information?

No. MIDI is a protocol, a language. MIDI has no sound and cannot transmit audio information.

You can either assign a hardware sound mofule to the MIDI track and use one of the sound moldule's sounds, or you can do the same with a software synth.

Or you can go from the Casio's stereo "Line Out" and go into your soundcard's stereo "Line In" and record the sounds produced by the Casio onto an audio track in your tracking software.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may try the audio line in tip. I have also determined I probably need an updated sound card and editing program. Although I have done some sampling and recorded a few things through a microphone on my computer, all the midi stuff is new to me.
