I have programmed a song on my boss dr-770 drum machine and would like to have it played by the drum machine in cubase sx. hookup is as follows: midi out boss 770. midi in to my sound card. In the midi track I have selected the sound card as the in, and the lm-7 as the out. Doesnt seem to work. any ideas? thanks.

You want to record the midi signal FROM the SR-16 ONTO midi tracks in Cubase. Once you've captured the midi then you can choose what midi source to trigger (whether its in Cubase or external).

Just like in audio, you can't use plug-ins/midi sources live.......

I see, Record the midi from the drum machine to a midi track first, then choose which patch to play it back. Unfortunately, I don't think the midi frim the drum machine is getting to the midi track correctly. Also, The LM-7, the virtual vst drum machine that comes with cubase, can be played in real time with a midi controler. Is'nt my boss drum machine just another kind of midi controler, and should be able to trigger the LM-7 in real time? Thanks for the help bear....

Possibly -- I haven't messed around a whole lot with midi in Cubase.... only the odd time.

But if the midi signals are not getting to Cubase then that would explain why you can't trigger the midi patches!

Check your connections - make sure the SR-16 is set to output midi data....

When your trying to record the MIDI signal, does the little red "MIDI in" bars light up in the transport area? That should tell you if the MIDI is getting in okay.

Regarding your drum machine triggering the LM7 sounds in realtime, it doesn't really work that way (unless yoru unbelievably lucky). A midi controller usually takes the form of a keyboard. The LM7 sounds can be triggered by pressing the right keys on the keyboard. Now I don't know if a drum machine qualifies as a controller, but even if it did you would have to go in and program each drum machine pad to have the right MIDI key# to trigger the appropriate sounds in the LM7. I think your best bet is to just get the MIDI into SX. You will probably find that the drum sounds don't match up (ie...your snare now sounds like a bass drum, ect) but you can solve this in the MIDI editor rather quickly.
