MIDI ports

Hello, all!

I have a problem that is probably a pretty easy deal to solve. I just can't find the solution myself. I am using Cakewalk Sonar 2.0XL and a Audiophile 2496 soundcard. I used to use a Soundblaster Live! and Cakewalk 9.03.

My problem is that when I had the old setup; I used to have the onboard MIDI-sounds as metronome when recording MIDI. I just checked OPTIONS/PROJEKT/METRONOME and choosed port #2, which was the Soundblaster Live! MIDI sounds. Port 1 was the actual MIDI port where I connected my synth.

So, with my new setup, I can't find any way to use the onboard sounds as metronome. I just got DELTA AP MIDI and Microsoft MIDI Mapper as available MIDI devices. But The Delta MIDI is busy recording incoming MIDI eventes from my synth and the Midi Mapper returns nothing but silence.

I was thinking that the Midi Mapper is actually playing the ticks, but in order to hear it I need to check some not-yet-found box in the control panel?

I know there is nothing wrong with the drivers or the software, because when I play a .MID file in WinAmp, it uses the Delta MIDI sounds.

This card is way to expensive to have me recording with the speakers on LOOOOOW volume while paying attentino to the internal PC speaker as metronome.

Anyone of you guys who knows the solution to this problem?

The Audiophile doesn't have any means to playback midi opposed to the soundblaster live with its soundfonts. The audiophile is purely an I/O interface.

Well, I figured that since the Audiophile can playback MIDI files with it's onboard MIDI sounds, it must also be possible to use them as metronome?

Or why is there onboard MIDI sounds at all, if it is not possible to use them?

You are confused.

The Audiophile does not have onboard MIDI sounds. (Unless you have a new model that I'm not aware of yet!) The sound you are hearing is probably from the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth, which is getting MIDI data from the MIDI Mapper and sending its output to your preferred audio output device. I'm just guessing, though. The settings for all of this are on the Multimedia control panel. Look at your "preferred device" settings.

While you could use the GS Wavetable as your metronome, I think the latency would make it all but useless. Can you reinstall the SB Live! and use its onboard synth? (My Audiophile coexists peacefully with my SB-compatible onboard sound.)

Yes, you were right. It was the "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth". Thank you for helping out!

Unfortunatly I have allready sold my SB Live!, but I think that I have an old AWE 64 around here somewhere. I guess I'll try to combine them in a few days.

Some time ago, I had a Hoontech SoundTrack 128 that coexisted with my AWE 64. It did not work out that well, becuase there was a hardware conflict between the two MIDI ports (at 330). I never managed to disable one of the ports.
