Midi port in not working in Cakewalk/xp

Hi,

Its a kind of a newbie question but cakewalk related :) im starting out on home recording and trying to link up a keyboard as a controller (just for midi in really) and cakewalk just doesnt recognise any input. Im wondering if its my game port/windows xp where the problem is, as i have installed at work to test and it had an 'input' source in the midi box properties, where as at home it doesnt.

the keyboard is a Yamaha pss-750 jobbie i think.
Im running windows XP and the motherboard has a built in soundcard & gameport.(soltek sl75kav-x i think.......)
Im using one of those adapters that plugs into gameport and has a midi in and midi out cable.

Does anybody have any advice on how to get XP to recognise the midi port in if this is the case because i have looked to no great success.

Dumb question: Have you installed the driver for the game/midi-port?

Yeah, I reinstalled the motherboard 4 in 1 drivers & the audio drivers - recognises the gameport no problem but still in cakewalk in the midi box where it has midi in sourceon one side and midi out source on the other - there are no options for a midi in source.

Im assuming it is a driver problem, or maybe i have to turn on the midi functionality somewhere in XP ? i have a sneaky feeling that the problem isnt with cakewalk.
 
Check your Motherboard's manual, and see if there's an option to turning on/off of the onboard Soundcard/MIDI port. It could be the jumper setting, or simply by enabling it on your BIOS setup. OR re-check the driver for your MIDI port. Most of the card, put different driver for "sound" and "Joystick/MIDI" port. ;)
 
anyway... What Cakewalk ? If there's alot of devices pluged in your system, you may be run out of IRQ / DMA resource. Can you tell us more about your what are loaded in your system ? ;)
 
I've been in this situation before, with TXIIPro MB, then it solved by removing any particular -I don't understand- device driver which autoloaded into WinXP ( Microsoft assumes that we need that device...:mad: No we dont !)

The keyboard is now making noises in cakewalk (pro audio 9 demo) ...after reading your post i checked the bios....and 'sound blaster' & something called mpu-401 were disabled under the onboard sound settings :) so i enabled them, booted and now have a midi input source in the midi settings.

Initial things i have noticed is a small delay in the playing of the controller keys to the output thru cakewalk, not massive but noticable if you try and alternate fast beetween two notes/chords etc. Is this a limitation to get used to or can i sync something up so the gap is less noticable ? the pitch bend etc works.

Thnaks again for the advice, i spent hours over the last few nights just messing about and not going anywhere !

About the delay problem -it's also called MIDI echo latency- it's often caused by MIDI port's driver, or app's working in backround. The signal routing scheme is :

Yamaha > MIDI Ports > Port's driver > Windows > DirectSound/MME/WDM driver > CWPA9.

CWPA9 > DirectSound/MME/WDM driver > Windows > Port's driver > MIDI Ports > Yamaha.

So, through that ways, there's a chance the data might be delayed a bit. However, in Cake's > Options > Global > MIDI, you can adjust the buffer to record and playback, and uncheck any unnecesary mesages signal communicated. Here you can -maybe- get lucky to reduce the delay... ;)

And make sure you're not running any unnecesary app's in background. It will take up your CPU's process power.

Hi,

Well you know how i said the midi was now working ? well it is..very well ! allthough i can't seem to select anything but midi now in the track properties..i know i should be able to select left sound /right sound etc, because my idea was to just record some sound via the mic or line in to test....but all i have is midi options!

Is this a driver problem still ? i know the mic input works in windows because i used the audio settings hardware tester.

Options --> Audio --> Driver
Do you see your Soundcard's driver there ? Input & Output.
If so, make sure you highlight Input & Output. Restart Cakey... Voila...;)
