MIDI playback through monitors

Hi, I would like to know what I can do to play back MIDI through my monitors instead of my synthesizer.
I have a yamaha ps520 connected via MIDI cables to an audiophile 2496. I have yorkville YSM1p connected directly to the audio outputs of the audiophile. I use sonar 2.

I know the audiophile only has a midi interface and not a synthesizer. What can I do to hear both MIDI and audio through my monitors?

Sounds like you need a mixer. You would run your PC audio outs and the synth audio outs to the mixer, which would run into an amp of some kind, then out of your monitors.

i've been doing some research on the site and have read that using a software synth is a way to playback midi through monitors when the soundcard does not support midi playback as mine doesnt. I would prefer this option than getting a mixer since it is cheaper and doesnt require any more cables or devices.
I am not sure exactly what a software synth is or does and what I would have to do to get it to play my MIDI through my monitors. Any information would be appreciated. thanks.

Guitar Ed is right. Even small mixers are cheap now. Go get some on Ebay.

HUH??? What are you all talking about???????????

You don't hear MIDI at all -- MIDI is not an audio signal - it's a command protocol used to instruct midi-driven devices to perform certain functions, whether it's a patch change, a note on or off, real-time controller changes, etc...

You "hear" MIDI by monitoring the audio outs of the midi device being driven (typically a synth, sampler, drum machine...)

blue bear, what i want to do is hear the music I recorded from my MIDI keyboard on my monitors along with the audio that will be recorded using a microphone. Right now I hear the MIDI only as coming out of the keyboard.
I am not knowledgable with the technical aspect of MIDI so if I use the wrong language or use the word "MIDI" to refer to the wrong thing that is why.
Basically, I want to hear everything coming out of the monitors and if there was a way to do that through software as opposed to adding external devices and cables I would prefer it. Outside of getting a mixer is there another solution? I am new to this and hope I have explained what I am trying to do well.

So if I understand correctly....

You've recorded MIDI parts onto recording s/w using your keyboard. You want to hear those midi parts from your s/w as you overdub new audio parts onto the s/w?

If you want everything to come from your s/w monitoring, you have to have a plug-in instrument in your s/w that will respond to the midi commands you've recorded and output that to your s/w's mixer. In effect, it then simply becomes another "channel" you hear as you monitor.

The only other option is to run a midi output from your computer interface back to your keyboard and have the s/w drive your keyboard again, while you listen to your keyboard's output (or you re-route your keyboard output back into your s/w and mix it in with whatever else you're monitoring.

I realize I haven't really explained myself well so I will try again from the beginning.

My ultimate goal is to record songs that I will burn onto a CD.
These songs will mostly have vocals, guitar, keyboard, and "drums" with the drums being made with my keyboard using a drum patch since we don't have a drummer.

The vocals and guitar are "audio" tracks in that they will be recorded microphone -> preamp -> soundcard.
The keyboard and "drums" are MIDI tracks in that they will be recorded keyboard -> MIDI cables -> soundcard.
I am using sonar 2 for everything (recording, mixing). the keyboard is a yamaha psr520. the soundcard is an audiophile 2496.

The MIDI tracks are being played back through the keyboard. The audio tracks are being played back through the monitors (yorkville ysm1p). My dilemma is how can the song be mixed well if the MIDI plays back through the keyboard and the audio plays back through the monitors?
For that reason I began looking for a way to play back both the audio tracks and the midi tracks through the monitors which is the reason I started this thread.
I have yet to mix or burn a song but looking ahead I am also wondering what effect, if any, the audio and MIDI tracks being played back from different places will translate when I burn it onto CD and play it on a CD player.
I am new to recording and there are many things I do not know how to do yet. Thanks for the help.

In that case you simply run the keyboard audio output BACK INTO your soundcard and route it to an audio channel on the mixer.... (or even record it as a separate audio track).

From there you can blend everything via your s/w mixer......
