MIDI Panning

Ok, I've got a MIDI file (.mid) saved on my computer. I wrote it in a tablature program (Power Tab Editor). I am going to run it through a piano VSTi for a realistic sound.

What I need to do is auto pan the MIDI file, so all keys to the left of middle C will be panned to the left speaker accordingly...

And all keys to the right will be panned to the right speaker.

So the lowest key on the piano would have a pan of -100, the next, -90 (or whatever), and so on until it gets to middle C which would be panned dead center. And of course all the keys to the right would increase in pan, 10, 20, 30, etc...

Is there something I can use to do this? Any plugins or software that you know of?

Well, obviously you will need a stereo module or vsti that responds to midi pan (CC#10). The easiest way would be just to draw the cc in the key editor of your sequencer.

Another easy way if your module is multitimberal would be to just split your controller, copy the same patch to 2 slots on two different midi channels, each panned hard right and hard left respectively and then have each side of the split send on those channels so one side is playing 1 patch that is panned right and the other side is playing the patch that is panned left

Your plan will result in a zany, not piano-like at all listening experience, expecially in headphones.

What you are setting out above is a plan for modifying the stereo image of the piano. You could use it in combination with panning, but in itself that not 'panning'. Panning is the placement in the stereo field of an instrument or a group of instruments. It used to be called 'balance', but now in the modern world of mono or stereo tracks being interchangable 'panning' has come into wide use.

If you pick a nice stereo piano VSTi it will have some of the 'low keys on the left, high keys on the right' that you're looking for, but it will be with in a 30 degree or so field so no notes sound like they're coming from over your shoulder when you listen in headphones.

After listening on headphones it does sound better. I may have to use a stereo imager on the audio or something to make it a bit wider but it sounds ok.

I really need a MIDI controller so I don't have to manually program everything, like velocity, panning, etc.
