I feel like i know nothing about midi, can anyone point me in the direction of a website/tutorials etc?? I'm interested to know how, if it can, be used to actually make usuable music and sounds rather than the horrible sounds you get when you play a midi file in windows. My guess is this has something to do with using differernt sets of virtual instruments though? Like i said, cluelesss...

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but try Google. I promise you will learn something with a few quick searches. When further questions arise, we have a Midi section here at HR.

The horse's mouth: http://www.midi.org/

Take a look on the left side of the page, under "About MIDI." That'll probably be enough information to get you started.

Midi has nothing to do with the sound. Midi is nothing more than the instructions sent to the synthesizer. So it all depends on how good your synth is. Computer soundcards have horrible synths so midi music sounds crappy on a PC's internal card. Other synths sound awesome. Buy an awesome synth, program awesome midi commands, and hear awesome midi music.

you know, those standard crappy sounds really gives a bad name to MIDI. It sucks whenever you bring MIDI up in a conversation with a non-music person they automatically think "crappy sound" or "cell phone ringer"
